If you are just setting up a new business for your self or you are already established, at some point you will consider commissioning a new logo design. You can spend hundreds of pounds on a professional branding service but contrary to common belief a quality unique logo design does not need to be so expensive. Logo design is a very competitive market to get into so there is always a good deal to be done somewhere. One of the best places to go for reasonably priced custom-made logo design is eBay. In this guide, I will show you how to get the best from buying a logo design service on eBay.
Work out what you want.
Before you can purchase a logo design service on eBay, or anywhere else, you need to know or work out what you want. This is not something to leave for your designer to guess. This will only waste time as your designer offers up unsuitable concepts and you may find yourself paying for extra concepts as the package inclusion is eaten up.
A Good logo design brief when buying a logo design service on eBay.
A good design brief will always include ‘your own ideas” of the kind of thing you are looking for. Colour schemes and the kind of imagery you would like to be incorporated into the design. You may just want a wordmark only or a monogram of the initials of your business name. You should be as detailed as posable but be sure to state what is more important to you as your logo designer will not want to overcrowd the design. If there is any part of the name to have extra emphasis or to stand out, let you logo designer know this as well.
A good logo designer will ask you for more information if your brief is to obscure or needs clarification.
A bad logo design brief when buying a logo design service on eBay.
A bad design brief is asking the logo designer to give you exactly what they are already offering, and nothing else when answering the question. “your own ideas for the logo design” See example below.
The logo will have to be unique and professional looking. The industry is business management and recruitment services so something along those lines. Somthing cooperate. I am open to sugestions.
This really happens quite frequently and sometimes comes across as quite rude and demeaning as well as unhelpful. And then the poor designer has bitten their tongue (or have tied their typing fingers together.) and knuckled down working on the non-existent logo design brief in the name of good customer service to only get told that this was not what was asked for”.
What to consider in your logo design brief.
As mentioned above, as much “constructive” information as posable. Here is a bulleted list of what most logo designers on eBay ask for upfront from anyone that has read the item description part of the logo designers listing on eBay.
- Name of business or organisation.
- The nature of the business, industry or organisation
- preferred colour schemes
- Your ideas for the design
Once you have this information at hand you are all set for buying a logo design service on eBay.
What to look for when buying a logo design service on eBay.
Use the search box on eBay to look for logo design or logo design service. Take a look at what is on offer and what the individual sellers are offering and see if it meets any of the following requirements.
For all your basic needs you will need a regular image file format such as jpg or jpeg. These are exactly the same. You may be familiar with these formats if you use images often. They are the formats used by your digital cameras and phones. You will probably be used to sharing them on social media platforms such as Facebook and Instagram. The image is made up of pixels, or tiny dots. The technology is often referred to as “bitmap” or “raster” imaging. The next important image file is png. The png file has the same properties as the other “bitmap” formats with the added bonus that the subject of the image, and in our case the logo design, can be displayed against a transparent background. This is handy if you want to superimpose your logo design onto a background of your choice. A photograph for example. Other older “bitmap” image files that may be offered are gif. and tiff but are not so commonly used these days and for the purpose of logo design have no benefits above jpg jpeg and png file formats. Also, jpg and jpeg can be compressed in order to save web space when using the file on a website or social media for example, which is ok for web use as you only need the higher resolution (non-compressed) version for large print jobs. More on this later.
Vector file formats.
Where the standard image file such as jpg is made up of pixels which is great for photography and general use, a vector graphic is digitally plotted on the canvas as it is drawn. It is made up of points, shapes and curves. They can be scaled to any size without any visual deterioration. As they do not consist of “pixels”, unlike the jpg and it’s “bitmap” brethren, there is no pixelization. With the right applications, they can be edited.
SVG is the mother of all vector file formats. It is open source and is compatible with all major vector drawing applications including Adobe Illustrator who also had a major part in its development and uses the same standard in their own patented formats ai and eps. If your logo designer is offering the SVG format then you are on safe ground when it comes to future proofing your logo design due to its versatility and compatibility. Your designer may also offer ai or eps formats but SVG is the one to go for.
The vector file is also the equivalent to the old-fashioned photographers “negative”. Your logo designer may not offer this as part of the initial package for one of two reasons. One, they are holding onto it to offer it to you as part of a copyright deal (they failed to mention upfront) at a later date for additional purchase. Two, there is no vector file format as the designer does not use or subscribe to a real vector drawing application. In this case, you will only ever receive a “bitmap” version of the logo design which could turn out to be a stack of pre-made clipart pasted together.
The PDF file.
You will probably come across this one a lot. In the vector graphic world, this one is also exported by all vector graphic applications. And when so it is also editable as such. However, the pdf is also produced by non-vector applications. So unless your logo design vendor is also offering the SVG vector format at the same time you can not assume that their pdf file is a vector based source file.
The vector-based pdf is the best file to use for printing your logo.
Is the logo design package seller showing his wears? They may be using all of their twelve mage allowances up with logo designs that they have done themselves but first look at the quality and the content of the designs and ask yourself if they look like genuine assignments?
Things to look out for are “your name” and “your slogan” or “business name”! This suggests that the person offering the service has no previous work to show you. Also if the designs on offer appear to show silly made up names then they probably are. It is true that we all have to start somewhere, but it is something to bear in mind when weighing up the pros and cons along with the other advice contained in this post.
An established logo designer, however, is only too proud to show off his best works to his or her potential punters.
When buying a logo design service on eBay you need to consider how the logo design sellers are presenting themselves. eBay sellers and freelancers alike are generally sole traders who work as a single entity. “We” is often used instead of the single “I” in order to make their setup look larger than it is. A small fib maybe, but still it is an untruth. The bigger lie, however, is that some have the audacity to make statements in the listing such as “One of our designers will contact you…” In reality, as mentioned above, this is a competitive business, how many designers can you get working for you and pay them a wage out of £8.99 per job minus all the selling fees and keep a cut for your self.
Revisions and concepts.
Unlimited revisions sound’s great yes? Well, it is but you need to know exactly what is being revised. Not the whole design package that’s for sure.
Your logo designer should let you know this up front by telling you how many concepts are included for you to choose from. Generally, it is three but this can vary. Any more than three may leave you spoilt for choice which may not be a bad thing. Once your project has been finalised you may be offered any leftover concepts or versions as an additional sale and usually at a fair price.
Now revisions usually mean just that, minor changes to your chosen concept but without changing the concept itself. If you should change your mind or get extra inspiration mid concept it is feasible to request such changes but be prepared to pay extra for the extra service.
£2.99. Don’t even go there.
£5.99. This is the poor guy who has started out low to pick up some initial business but has not realised it is time to increase his prices in the name of a well-earned break. Basically, two rushed off his feet to do a decent job but doesn’t get any complaints because whos going to complain if it only costs £5.99
£9.99 to £24.99. The best price for a very reasonable service. Again check that all the requirements you need are on offer including vector source files. You will need to look after these if you want to future proof your logo and make amendments.
It is true that you get what you pay for.
So in short.
Decide what you need when you are buying a logo design service on eBay.
Research your logo design vendor and ask if they meet your requirements so you can use your logo knowing that it is future proof.
